Indigo has made a grant of £15,310 to RLabs South Africa for the establishment, in association with the Namibia Business Innovation Centre (NBIC), of RLabs Namibia. RLabs seeks to provide young technology entrepreneurs with the skills, tools and design training to create socially focussed ICT solutions.
RLabs Namibia will become part of RLabs’ rapidly expanding network of labs across the African continent. At present, Indigo is funding RLabs main home base in South Africa, as well as an additional lab in Somaliland, while Namibia will be the third such initiative that Indigo is involved with. Through an RLabs Academy and an Innovation Incubator and Accelerator (InnovIA), RLabs Namibia hopes to stimulate further growth and innovative applications of ICT in Namibia. Crucially, it will seek to empower Namibian youth who – like their counterparts in Somaliland – have to contend with some of the highest youth unemployment rates on the planet.
The grant will be used to buy vital equipment for the lab in preparation for the launch of RLabs Namibia in March of 2013. We are hopeful that this collaboration between RLabs South Africa and the NBIC will result in a busy and vibrant lab dedicated to the use of ICT to solve social problems.
