Learning from Europe-Conferences on the Continent

I’ve been travelling across Europe to learn about various elements of the field of ICT4D and meet some of the inspirational people who are helping to make positive social change happen.  I attended the Ariadne Network Annual Policy Event, which looked at the way private philanthropists and other funding bodies can best contribute to the field of human rights and social justice.  A New Technology subgroup is now discussing issues relating to how new technologies can improve governance, support development goals and strengthen campaigning and advocacy interventions.

I also attended the ePsi Platform Open Data Conference in Berlin, which explored the opportunities and threats involved in making public sector informational more widely available to citizens.  Issues addressed included legislation, funding models, formats and implications for society.  Speakers highlighted examples of innovation from the developing world as best practice.
