This morning, I had a fascinating meeting with Gavin Hayman (Director of Campaigns) and Sue Canderton (Head of Trusts and Foundations) at Global Witness. They are working hard to hold governments and industries accountable to their citizens. They have run pioneering campaigns against natural resource related conflict and corruption and have highlighted human rights and environmental abuses taking place.
Their work can be summarised as the field of natural resource accountability, including natural resources in conflict and corruption as well as environmental stability. They also provide legal support, with the aim of ending impunity.
We discussed their recent interest in considering the ways in which ICT could contribute to their field including the potential of collaborating with FrontlineSMS Legal to increase efficiencies in their impunity cases, strengthening accountability through enhancing the flow of information and expanding its reach (using mobile phone technology and potentially the internet), enhancing communication between campaigners and for data collection and monitoring (which may be particularly useful in projects focusing on forest protection).
